2020 Block 4 Moppa Shiraz

2020 Block 4 Moppa Shiraz

From the Westlake Vineyards at Moppa on the northern tip of the Barossa Valley's western edge. The undulating landscape rich with ancient stone and red/ brown loams mirrors that of our other vineyard estates at Marananga and Seppeltsfield. Producing low yields of intensely flavoured small-berried grapes, these three estates form the foundation of our winemaking masterplan. Block 4 is the most westerly of four blocks planted across a north-facing slope that intersects the Westlake Vineyards. The brown/ red loams of the lower section gradually recede as an increasingly rocky landscape emerges as elevation increases. The base wine was made from a section of the vineyard featuring a deep red clay profile. This limited bottling from a single American oak hogshead that we believed to represent the quintessential incarnation of Shiraz from this block. The wine is an elegant expression of Moppa Shiraz. Composed and lively on the palate, with violet floral notes with spices intertwined with freshly picked blueberries and mulberries. The tannins are silky and fine with notes of beetroot and vanilla bean lurking within the rich fruit flavours. Matured for 20 months in 20% new and 80% seasoned French and American oak. Drink now to 2033. Approximately 380 bottles produced.
