2020 Moppa Grenache 750ml

2020 Moppa Grenache 750ml

Redcurrant and mulberry intermingle over a powdery tannin structure that provides balance and carries notes of sweet spice. A fresh and delicate finish hints at crisp red apple skin. Evocative of the Greenock Creek style, this Grenache displays a vivacious and textured aroma with a palate lifted by a surprising line of acid which will support mid-term cellaring. Drinking well now, this wine suits additional ageing well for 3-5 years.    The grapes for our 2020 Grenache come from the Westlake Family Vineyards in the Moppa sub-region, approximately 10km North East of our estate.  Nestled amongst the rolling hills at the northern fringe of the Barossa Valley, the beautiful property has been in the family for 3 generations and the vines planted over what was the Moppa Goldfields in the late 1800s.  Although the soil structure varies across the block they mainly consist of shallow red brown top soils over heavy red clays, scattered with ironstone and quartz.  These variations and the vineyard aspect provides complexity and depth to the wines. Vinification Harvested and de-stemmed without crushing. Fermented in open slate fermenters for 7-10 days with regular pump-overs to maintain a consistent fermentation temperature of 20-24°C. Drained and basket pressed before being transferred to a combination of seasoned French oak barrels with the balance seasoned for 8 months. Bottled un-filtered and un-fined Vintage Low rainfall in the lead-up to the 2020 vintage resulted in low bunch numbers and small open canopy in the vines. Heat in the early development slowed berry maturation and allowed longer flavour progress as the ripening season remained mild with warm days and cool nights. The wines of this vintage display elegance and floral notes with a purity of fruit that reflects a unique sense of place.
