Durif is a hybrid grape variety created by French botanist Dr Francois Durif in the 1890’s. He cross-pollinated Shiraz with Peloursin to create a small-berried, thick-skinned black grape. Californian winemakers often refer to Durif as ’Petite Syrah’ – small Shiraz. Durif wines are typically black in colour, rich in flavour with firm tannin. Cellaring potential can often be measured in lifetimes!
From a single vineyard block that follows a contoured ridge line sitting just below our High Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon block. The exposed vines planted in soils lighter in clay content and richer in ironstone produce low yields of flavour-packed berries. This is a brooding, meaty and tannic wine built for cellaring. Black bitter cherries, dark melted chocolate and tobacco notes are tightly held by grippy tannins. The naturally high acidity gives a freshness to the wine and appears as blueberries on the back palate. Approximately 900 bottles produced. Drink now to 2040.
