The vines were planted by the creek in the 1960s on sandy brown loam with grey clay. The loam and grey clay combination provides the wine with immense density of fruit flavour and velvety, mouth-filling tannins. The fruit profile tends towards mulberries and blueberries with some clay-influenced anise and milk chocolate undertones.
This single-block wine went out of production in 2005 but we brought it back in 2017. In some ways there’s a precariousness to the creek-side site but it’s an evocative spot with history and the capacity to grow a sensational wine with character. We’ve retrellised the vines to better control the canopy and achieve finer balance. We’re very happy with the results.
The wine spent 18 months in French wood, first in new oak from A.P. John and then a one-year-old Sylvain barrel.
