Dark-chocolate-dipped black cherries, blackcurrant and dark cherry compote fruit characters with layers of baking spices, mocha, blueberry pie, gentle cedar tones, chocolate bullets and earth. There's a leading citrus blossom note on the palate, then a sweep of the most pure dark and black fruits, compact, ferrous-edged, powdery tannins and a velvety flow as the wine slowly trails off. - 95 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
The vines were planted in 1997 on ancient slaty siltstone mixed with dark brown clays and loam. The siltstone seems to show up in the wine as midpalate spiciness and savoury tannins. The brown clay lends the wine its chocolate/mocha spectrum with fruit that tends towards raspberry and redcurrant, which makes for a particularly food-friendly Shiraz.
